South El Monte Mayor Luis Aguinaga officially resigned his post Tuesday morning, two weeks after he agreed to plead guilty to accepting $45,000 in bribes from a city contractor. Tuesday’s decision marks a pitiful end for Aguinaga, who had been with the city for thirteen years, holding the position of mayor for the past seven.
“It has been a tremendous honor and privilege to have represented equally, residents and business in the Community,” Aguinaga said in his letter of resignation.
Mayor Pro Tem Gloria Olmos has already assumed the duties of mayor. On Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors also voted to request an investigation into alleged improprieties by South El Monte employees and potential mishandling of public funds.
