The Huntington Beach City Council approved a resolution Tuesday expressing solidarity with the State of Texas in its fight against the Biden administration over security at the U.S.-Mexico border.
The resolution was introduced by Mayor Pro Tem Pat Burns and passed 4-3. The resolution was supported by Mayor Gracey Van Der Mark, Councilmember Tony Strickland, and Councilmember Casey McKeon. Dan Kalmick, Rhonda Bolton, and Natalie Moser voted no.
“We have a lot of stuff that we need to address here,” Bolton said, adding that the issue is “not related to city business.”
Bolton was echoing a sentiment expressed by numerous meeting attendees.
Those in favor of the resolution said President Joe Biden had abdicated his duty to secure the U.S. border, and that the resulting chaos affects the entire country – not just Texas.
The lone star state is embroiled in a legal fight with the federal government over whether it can set up razor wire to inhibit illegal crossings. The federal government says the wire is interfering with Border Patrol's ability to its job.
The Supreme Court recently ruled that the federal government could tear down the wire. In defiance, Abbott has ordered the placement of additional razor wire, calling the crossing of undocumented migrants “an invasion.”
