For local governments, the economic situation grows more dire by the day. That’s one clear takeaway from a new survey conducted by the United States Conference of Mayors and the National League of Cities.
The survey was conducted April 1-7. Officials from more than 2,400 cities and towns were given a questionnaire.
The vast majority (88%) of local leaders who responded said they expect a budget shortfall this year as a result of the coronavirus. 52% of government leaders said they expect to cut public services. Layoffs are expected by 27%. Furloughs are expected by 30%. And 52% believe police and public safety will be negatively affected.
The crisis is most extreme for those cities with 50,000 to 500,000 people. That’s because only municipalities with populations over 500,000 are eligible for direct CARES funding from the federal government.
