If you haven’t already, be sure to check out our summary on the special election for the Los Angeles City Council’s District 12, plus this post-mortem on the failure of Measure EE.

Without further ado, here are a few other noteworthy things that happened last Tuesday:

Compton City Council Runoff: There’s a New Councilwoman in Town

Two Compton City Council seats were in play on June 4. In District 4, incumbent Emma Shariff held steady, defeating Justin A. Blakely. But in District 1, Councilmember Janna Zurita was ousted from the seat she’s held since 2011. Michelle Chambers is the new District 1 representative for Compton. The vote was 63.82% to 36.18%.

Riverside City Council Election

Runoffs, runoffs, and more runoffs. That’s what came out of the City Council election in Riverside on June 4. Not a single candidate in any of the four races garnered more than 50% of the vote, so eight of them will head to match-ups in November.

They are:

Mike Gardner and Erin Edwards in Ward 1.

Warren Avery and Ronald Fierro in Ward 3.

Sean Mill and Gabriela Plascencia in Ward 5.

Steve Hemenway and William Pearce in Ward 7.

Arcadia Special Municipal Election: Measure A

Voters in Arcadia authorized a three-quarter cent sales tax to fund general municipal services via Measure A. The initiative passed with 63.95% of the vote.

The city estimates the sales tax would raise $8.6 million per year. A mid-year budget review for 2018-2019 showed a $4.5 million deficit. Revenue from the tax may be used for public safety, parks, street maintenance, and other necessary projects.

St. Helena Rejects Rent Stabilization Ordinance for Mobile Homes

Voters rejected Measure F, which would have limited rent increases on mobile home residents under leases of one year or less. With 100% of precincts reporting, the measure had 525 yes votes (39.86%) and 792 no votes (60.14%).
