The City of Poway has become the first in the nation to ban drones from most of its airspace—at least for the time being.
In a 4 to 1 vote Tuesday, the city council approved a 45-day moratorium on drone operations over 75% of the city, citing recent incidences in which the objects have hampered firefighting efforts. The urgency ordinance was proposed by Mayor Steve Vaus and can be extended for up to 2 years after the 45-day period. Council Member John Mullin cast the only dissenting vote, saying the rules were too vague.
The city attorney has already begun working on a more detailed, permanent ordinance which will eventually go before the city council. The State Senate, meanwhile, has approved legislation mandating fines of up to $5,000 and six months in jail for drone operators who get too close to a wildfire.
