Life doesn’t end after 65. In fact, nowadays, retirement can be one of the most fulfilling times in a person’s life. With that in mind, the personal finance site SmartAsset.com recently laid out its rankings of the 10 Best Cities for an Active Retirement.
To determine the rankings, SmartAsset looked at data for the 575 largest cities in the U.S. It combined its metrics for overall retirement-friendless, such as effective tax rates and doctors’ offices, with active lifestyle factors like fitness centers, golf courses and city Walk Scores.
There were some pleasant surprises in this list. While the high cost of living consistently gives California low rankings in overall retirement friendliness, the researchers found the Golden State to be a prime destination for those seeking an active life outside of the workforce. Santa Barbara, California came in at #4 behind the cities of Rockville, Maryland (#3), Bethesda, Maryland (#2) and Wilmington, Delaware (#1). Santa Monica and Newport Beach also made the top 10 at #8 and #9 respectively.
