A beloved cat who has called a Texas library home for the past six years will soon have to find a new place to dwell. The City Council of White Settlement, Tex. gave him the ol’ heave-ho in a 2 to 1 vote this month, angering cat lovers (and children) everywhere.
Browser the cat has been living in the city’s public library since 2010, which is longer than some of the members have been on the dais. But he recently became collateral damage in a dispute over whether or not an employee could bring their puppy to work.
“City Hall and City businesses are no place for animals,” said Councilwoman Elzie Clements, who voted to give Browser the boot. She was joined by Councilman Paul Moore over the objections of the mayor and a group of children who pleaded for the cat to stay.
Browser now has 30 days to vacate the premises, but town activists are vowing to get the issue on the ballot.
“This is not just a cat, it’s like a family pet,” said one of the city’s former council members.
No word on whether Browser has squatters’ rights.
