A recently-indicted Texas mayor spent a night in the pokey this week after allegedly disrupting a council meeting focused on his potential recall.
We’re talking about Ricardo Lopez, mayor of Crystal City, Texas, who was ensnared earlier this month in a federal bribery and conspiracy probe. He is now facing calls for his ouster and was evidently so upset by Tuesday’s council meeting that he got into it with the crowd and had to be detained by police.
Lopez was held overnight on charges of resisting arrest, as well as possession of a controlled substance in a correctional facility, authorities said. The possession charge appears to be related to a prescription medication that was not kept in the proper bottle.
Poor Crystal City. The cash-strapped farming town just can’t seem to catch a break lately. Two other council members were indicted as part of the investigation earlier this month and another was arrested on unrelated human smuggling charges in January. That leaves the city council with just one member who isn’t facing criminal prosecution at this time.
