A herd of 80 goats in San Francisco are retiring from their Christmas tree disposal days, having finally grown sick of the taste of spruce and pine. That’s the word from City Grazing, a goat-based landscaping company that partners with the city fire department to dispose of old trees by lending a helping hand—err, hoof.
“They’ve eaten many, many trees and have reached the end of their appetite for the sticky deliciousness of spruce and fir,” said the company’s General Manager Genevieve Church. “They are still quite interested in eating ivy, blackberry, fennel, scotch broom, and all manner of weeds.”
Who can blame them? According to City Grazing, the goats have consumed 200 evergreens, which comes out to 2.5 trees each. After such an overwhelming response, it was inevitable that the animals would eventually decide they’d had their fill.
Residents, fret not. The city’s trash hauler is still collecting discarded trees from the curb. The program runs through January 15, so be sure to dispose of those olds tannenbaums before then.
