The City of Beaumont has turned to a town 1,200 miles away for its next city manager. Todd Parton, who currently serves as city manager in Kerrville, Texas, was appointed to the position in a 5-0 vote by the city council Tuesday. He will take over at the end of October at an annual salary of $229,000.
Parton will have his work cut out for him. The city’s last permanent city manager, Alan Kapanicas, just pleaded not guilty along with six other ex-Beaumont officials to a collective 94 felony counts of corruption. The city’s finances are in dire straits. Its former officials are accused of misappropriating some $43 million in funds.
Parton was chosen from a group of 42 candidates, according to the city. He has been in local government for 26 years, having also previously worked as a city administrator and planning director.
