Amid the tide of cities opposing SB 54 and even threatening to join a federal lawsuit against the state, a select few have rejected any efforts to challenge California’s sanctuary state policies.
This week, the cities of Porterville (Tulare County) and Paso Robles (San Luis Obispo County) joined that list. Both city councils rejected items that would have had them squaring off against the state.
Porterville’s vote was 4-1. Councilman Cameron Hamilton authored the resolution, calling SB 54 “a stick in the eye to the federal government.” His colleagues wanted no part of it.
In Paso Robles, councilmembers similarly voted 5-0 to take no action on SB 54. Members agreed the legislation is flawed and said they will draft a letter to the governor outlining their concerns, but “we're not here to fight the Supreme Court,” one councilman said.
