Las Vegas authorities have arrested two Nevada teens accused of killing Andreas “Andy” Probst, a 64-year-old retired police chief of Bell, California.
Probst died during a hit-and-run last month while riding his bicycle near the Las Vegas Strip. After his death, authorities became aware of video from the incident that was circulating online. In the video, a group of teenagers could be heard laughing as they hit Probst with their vehicle.
“The video showed how the driver intentionally sideswiped a sedan as they traveled northbound on Tenaya. A few seconds later, the suspects observed Probst riding his bicycle. The individuals pulled directly behind Probst and ran him over, as they fled the scene and laughed,” according to a LVMPD news release.
“Yeah, hit his a**,” one of the teens could be heard saying.
On Aug. 31, detectives located the vehicle and its driver, a 17-year-old male. He and another teen were arrested and booked into Clark County Juvenile Hall. Since the alleged crime is murder, the suspects will be tried as adults.
Probst served in law enforcement for more than 35 years before retiring to work in global security.
“Being around him, it was like being next to a ray of sunshine,” his daughter Taylor told The Las Vegas Review-Journal. “He was always laughing, always smiling, offering you support, life advice, career advice.”
She said the family was “devastated” after learning the shocking details of his death.
“Andy’s life was robbed by two individuals who did not believe that lives of others matter.”
