It’s hard to get Americans to agree on anything these days, but cute and cuddly animals are a rare exception. The City of White Settlement, Tex. learned that lesson the hard way this month, following national backlash against its recent decision to oust Browser, the city’s resident library cat.
White Settlement has been inundated with bad publicity since the story first broke, and it looks like all that hissing was just too much to handle. On Friday, the council voted 3-0 to reverse its previous decision and allow the cat to stay.
Browser has lived at the White Settlement Public Library for the past six years. Beloved by (nearly) all, he attends the library’s GED classes and even holds an honorary diploma. But the poor guy recently ended up in the middle of a dispute over an employee bringing their puppy to work. That resulted in a 2-1 vote to have him evicted from the library within 30 days.
Mayor Ron White and former Councilman Alan Price both rushed to Browser’s defense, and the cat’s supporters vowed to get the issue on the ballot. Fortunately, that won’t be necessary anymore.
