All but five California counties and four cities are out of compliance with a 2021 law that requires monitoring of homeless shelters, according to a new report from CalMatters.
The legislation requires local governments to inspect facilities’ conditions and publish reports on deaths, health and safety issues.
According to CalMatters, just nine jurisdictions had filed shelter reports as of this spring:
- Lake County
- Los Angeles County
- Monterey County
- Orange County
- Yuba County
- City of Fairfield
- City of Petaluma
- City of Santa Rosa
- City of Woodland
“It is shocking, number one, that there is so little reporting, considering that is part of the legislation. We are asking for the basics here,” Sharon Quirk-Silva, who authored the law, told CalMatters.
