A new interim fire chief will take the helm in Ventura on December 20. Assistant Fire Chief Kris McDonald has been promoted to the position ahead of Chief Dave Endaya’s retirement. Endaya’s last day is December 19.
“Kris brings deep operational expertise, a commitment to training and safety, and a steady leadership style that will support both our department and community during this transition,” said City Manager Bill Ayub. “We are grateful to Chief Endaya for his many contributions and wish him well in his retirement.”
McDonald has served as a firefighter, paramedic, engineer, captain, battalion chief, and assistant chief. In his current capacity, McDonald “oversees key operational functions within the Ventura Fire Department,” according to the city. “He has previously served in several command and training roles, supporting department operations, personnel development, and emergency response readiness. Regionally, he also holds multiple qualifications within California’s Incident Command System that strengthen the City’s capabilities during large-scale incidents.”
Endaya’s career with the Ventura Fire Department spans three decades. He has served as chief for the past 12 years.
“Serving the City of Ventura as Fire Chief has been one of the greatest honors of my career,” Endaya said. “I am proud of what we have accomplished and deeply grateful for the dedication, professionalism, and heart of the men and women of the Ventura Fire Department.”
