Sick of those high car insurance premiums? Check your city. A new analysis by NerdWallet.com has identified the most dangerous cities for drivers, where policy holders can expect 47% higher rates as a result.
To determine the safest and most dangerous driving locations, NerdWallet examined factors like car crashes, auto fatalities and vehicle-related crimes in the nation's 200 most populous cities. Then they compared the numbers with insurance rates to confirm their hypothesis: the safer the streets, the lower the bill.
Predictably, NerdWallet found that larger cities, particularly on the south and east coasts, suffered the most vehicle-related risks. In the 20 most dangerous cities, insurance rates averaged $1,721, compared with $1,169 in the 20 safest.
Detroit was ranked as the most dangerous city for drivers; Cary, North Carolina was the safest. San Bernardino and Oakland made the most dangerous list at No. 5 and 13. Santa Clarita came in at No. 5 on the Safest Cities list.
