California City News was proud to host a webinar Wednesday on the Grants Pass v. Johnson SCOTUS decision with the public law experts at Burke, Williams and Sorensen, LLP.
In Grants Pass, SCOTUS ruled that enforcing anti-camping laws in absence of available shelter does not violate the Constitution's Eighth Amendment protections against cruel and unusual punishment. In doing so, SCOTUS overturned the 2018 Martin v. Boise decision and expanded cities' power to enforce public camping restrictions.
A recording of the webinar is now available on YouTube.
You can access the slide presentations that were used during the webinar here.
Our panelists were Burke partner Deirdre Joan Cox and associate Tamar Burke. In addition to analyzing the High Court’s decision, they offered a list of recommendations for future anti-camping ordinances and answered a series of questions from the audience.
We extend our gratitude to Burke Law and the panelists for participating in this important webinar. We also thank the hundreds of attendees who joined the event.
