Adult film star Stormy Daniels could eventually do what congressional Democrats and even Robert Mueller’s team of investigators may be unable to do: bring down the sitting president of the United States. Now, a progressive city in Southern California has shown its appreciation by handing her the key to the city and proclaiming Wednesday “Stormy Daniels Day.”
Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, was introduced by Mayor John J. Duran as “our lady Godiva” at the proclamation ceremony. The event took place outside a sex toy shop with passersby shouting “thank you!” and wearing t-shirts that read “#resist.”
The whole affair rubbed some people the wrong way. (No pun intended, we swear.) Conservative news outlet the Washington Examiner ran with the headline, “California city rewards woman for supposedly sleeping with married man.” Daily Beast writer Ira Madison called it hypocritical, given Duran’s own history of alleged sexual misconduct.
But city leaders don’t see it that way.
"She is protesting, standing up to the most powerful man on the planet," the mayor said of his city’s decision to honor Daniels. "She's not backing down... She's being very brave and very courageous."
Daniels claims she had a sexual tryst with Donald Trump back in 2006. Shortly before the election, she received a $130,000 payment from Trump’s lawyer Michael Cohen allegedly in return for her silence about the affair. She is seeking to have the hush agreement invalidated because it was never signed by Trump himself. She is also suing Trump and Cohen for defamation.
The payment to Daniels could result in serious legal trouble if it’s ultimately deemed to have been an in-kind contribution to the campaign. It both exceeds the campaign contribution limit and was never disclosed to the FEC.
