A high tech venture group, 1776, has released a list of cities' "readiness to foster entrepreneurial growth and innovation in the next wave of the digital economy." Their use of "city" is a loose and general term, as it seems to treat metro regions, but counted that way, the three largest California regions all figure in the top 10, with the Bay Area just behind Boston who ranks 1st. "Although the Bay Area was the clear leader across most index categories, its rankings in ecosystem connectivity suggests that the competitive nature of the region may be reducing collaboration among startups, government, corporates and institutions, bumping it to the #2 spot."
Better get on the "ecosystem connectivty" then, NorCal. In other good news/bad news, SF might not be out as far ahead as it once was:
The Bay Area is still the clear leader of entrepreneurial activity, but New York, Boston, and Los Angeles report comparable startup to exit ratios. In terms of sheer quantity, San Francisco continues to reign supreme, but a weak score among some connectivity factors could help other cities take the lead. Certainly something to watch in coming years.
