America seems to be suffering from an empathy crisis. The country is nearing 400,000 deaths from COVID-19 with little word from the White House. Pandemic relief has been a perpetual political football in Congress, resulting in delayed benefits. We’ve seen public officials flout social distancing rules that have bankrupted small businesses. And despite overflowing morgues and emergency rooms, too many Americans continue to congregate in large groups, risking the lives of their neighbors.
It’s not all bad. Americans remains incredibly generous people. They donated nearly $450 billion to charity in 2019, according to Giving USA — only a small dip from the previous year.
WalletHub ran the stats last month to determine which cities are the most giving of all. They compared the 100 most populated cities across three categories: 1) Caring for the Community 2) Caring for the Vulnerable and 3) Caring in the Workforce.
Boston, MA, Madison, WI, and New York took the top three spots. Fremont, CA and Virginia Beach rounded out the top 5.
The 5 most charitable cities in California were:
- Fremont (#4 nationally)
- San Diego (#17 nationally)
- Irvine (#19 nationally)
- San Jose (#23 nationally)
- San Francisco (#27 nationally)
