Oakland Mayor Jean Quan has had her share of troubles since winning an upset election over Don Perata in 2014. In that race, a campaign music video helped elevate the underdog candidate to victory on Election Day.
The song, “Block by Block” has been described by the East Bay Citizen as “a theme song so devilishly catchy it stills burns into your cerebral cortex.”
That may explain why four years later, Quan is taking to YouTube again in hopes of recapturing lightning in a bottle.
This time it’s "Empowered Woman," created by Vallejo rapper Suga-T, with such lyrics as “She makes moves, close deals/ She’s a winner/Separates the real from the fake/No Beginner.”
In truth, words don’t do it justice. It really does have to been seen.
Of course, Quan’s opponents are hip to the viral video fad as well. Challenger Libby Schaaf created a campaign video of her own last month, encorporating some local slang in her reelection bid.
The slogan: “Libby Schaaf for mayor, because it’s hella time for leadership in Oakland.”
Which campaign video will carry the day? Oakland decides on November 4. We'll be hella interested to find out.
