THE POSITION
The City of Monterey Park is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of Assistant Director of Public Works / Assistant City Engineer. This position is responsible to direct, plan, organize, oversee, and review the work of professional, technical, and administrative staff performing duties related to all programs and activities of the Engineering Division. Participate in the development and implementation of Department and Engineering Division goals, objectives, policies, and procedures for assigned area; evaluate the operations and activities of the Division; represent the Department at Planning Commission and Traffic Commission meetings; and represent the Director of Public Works/City Engineer at City Council in their absence. The ideal candidate is a skilled leader who is energetic, hands on, forward thinking innovator with excellent communication, interpersonal, and listening skills.
THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
The Public Works Department is responsible for providing and maintaining the CIty's infrastructure in a manner that ensures the health, safety, and welfare of the City's residents and visitors. This includes the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operations of public land, including parks, roadways, sidewalks, sewers and storm drains; public buildings and structures; water production, storage and delivery facilities; and the repair and maintenance of City vehicles and equipment. The Public Works Department is made up of four divisions (Engineering, Water Utility, Maintenance Services and Parks) with 70 employees.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in professional civil engineering work
- Two (2) years of supervisory experience
- Valid Certificate of Registration as a Profession Civil Engineer from the State of California is required at the time of appointment and as a continuing condition of employment
SELECTION PROCESS
Candidates whose qualifications and experience best meet the needs of the City will be invited to an oral appraisal interview. The oral appraisal interview will evaluate the background and personal qualifications of each candidate. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an invitation to further testing.
Applicants will receive communication through email. NOTE: Successful completion of a pre-employment background and physical examination including a drug/alcohol screen will be required prior to appointment.
