The City of Half Moon Bay is recruiting for an Assistant Planner with at least one year of work experience in a city or county planning department (internship experience may be considered) to join our Community Development Department. Under direct supervision, the Assistant Planner:
Assistant Planner is a flexibly staff class in the Planner classification series. Promotion to the Associate Planner classification series may occur once the employee has met and demonstrated the required competency level and minimum requirements of the higher-level classification and in accordance with the City policy and procedures related to flexible staffing.

The City of Half Moon Bay is recruiting for an Assistant Planner with at least one year of work experience in a city or county planning department (internship experience may be considered) to join our Community Development Department. Under direct supervision, the Assistant Planner:
- Performs a variety of entry level routine and complex administrative, technical, and professional work for the City’s current planning programs related to development, code enforcement, compliance and implementation of related municipal plans and policies within the context of the California Coastal Zone.
- Conducts technical reviews of development and land use applications and zoning matters; prepares staff reports for plan review and site development; assists with preparing and reviewing City Ordinances, and other related work as required.
- Serves as the first point of contact for residents and customers at the permit counter; assesses customer needs in person, by phone or email to determine the best course of action to resolve questions and issues related to permitting process requirements, fees, permit status, municipal codes, ordinances, the City’s General Plan and certified Local Coastal Program, and laws.

- Enforce the policies and regulations related to land use and development
You will be responsible for:
- Performing technical review and monitoring land use and development applications, including following up on building permits, plan checks and listing fees.
- Preparing staff reports for routine land use and development plan permits.
- Providing technical advice to other departments, the public, contractors and other professionals, including explaining City ordinances, regulations, resolutions and planning and zoning policies.
- Coordinating project review with in-house departments and outside agencies ensuring that plans and applications receive appropriate approvals.
- Presenting projects with recommended actions to various committees, the Planning Commission and City Council.
- Researching, compiling and analyzing information for drafting and reviewing City ordinances.

Education and Experience

- Education: Equivalent to Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major work in city or regional planning, urban planning, architecture, urban design, or a closely related field.
- Experience: Equivalent of one year experience in a city or county planning department; and/or additional education, such as demonstrated with completion of a master’s degree or certification with CNU or other relevant professional organizations, may qualify for the required experience.)
- Licenses/Certificates: Possession of a valid California Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record OR demonstrate the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as required in the performance of duties.
