The City of Modesto is currently looking for Assistant and/or Associate Engineers to join our team.

The Assistant/Associate Engineer is responsible to perform professional engineering work in the investigation, planning, design, construction, and maintenance and operations of a variety of public works facilities, systems, and projects as well as residential, commercial, industrial and multi-family building and development projects.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Assistant Engineer - This is the entry level in the professional engineering series.  This class is distinguished from the Junior Engineer by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within this series. Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same level of independence of direction and judgment on matters allocated to the Associate Engineer. Incumbents have limited directly related professional engineering work experience. Employees work under general supervision while learning job tasks.

Associate Engineer – This is the journey level in the professional engineering series. This class is distinguished from the Assistant Engineer by the assignment of the full range of professional engineering duties. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Incumbents may exercise direct supervision of technical engineering staff.

Assistant/Associate Engineers are allocated to the Community and Economic Development Department, the Public Works Department, and the Utilities Department. The eligible list created from this recruitment will be used to fill vacancies within any of these departments.

The current vacancies are in the Engineering Services Division of the Utilities Department. Within that division, there are four disciplines: Utility Capital Planning, Water Design, Wastewater Design, and Construction Administration. The vacancies are located in the Capital Planning and Water Design group, focusing on water resource engineering.

Possession of a Certificate of Registration as a professional civil or traffic engineer in the State of California is not required for this position; however, it is desirable.
