Under administrative direction, performs professional fire administrative and managerial duties involved in supervising and coordinating assigned programs, activities, and operations of the Fire Department including operations, fire prevention, training, facility/equipment maintenance, emergency medical services, disaster preparedness, and related programs, services, and operations; responds to incidents to perform duties as required and/or assume command responsibilities; coordinates assigned activities with other departments, and outside agencies; and provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Fire Chief. The Battalion Chief is a non-exempt position.

Founded in 1852, the Auburn Fire Department takes pride in their heritage and continuous service to the community. Auburn Fire Department is a full service operation that responds to approximately 2,500 calls for assistance per year, and operates out of three fire stations.

Renowned for its beauty and outstanding quality of life, the City of Auburn is 7.5 square miles and home to an enlightened, diverse, and civic-minded population of approximately 14,011 people. Located at the crossroads of Interstate 80 and Highway 49, Auburn is the County Seat of Placer County as well as the home of the California Welcome Center. The City is located in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range at elevations between 1,000 and 1,500 feet above sea level. Auburn’s location provides the advantage of being above the valley fog and below the Sierra snow line.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Possession of a valid unrestricted CA driver's license and ability to obtain proper classification and endorsements for operation of a fire apparatus.
• The typical candidate will possess the equivalent to an Associates degree (60 semester or 90 quarter units) from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Fire Science or closely related field. A Bachelor’s degree in fire science or other related field is desirable.
• Seven years of increasingly responsible fire service experience is required, including three years of supervisory or administrative experience at a level comparable to that of a Fire Captain with the City of Auburn.
• Certified California EMT and CPR certification.
• Hazardous Materials First Responder Operations certification.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain Chief Officer certification within one year.
