The City of Berkeley, California, is seeking two Building Inspector I/IIs (Certified) who are passionate about their work and dedicated to providing high-quality inspection services to our customers. In this role, you will have the opportunity to perform a variety of residential-related inspection work, enforcing building, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, zoning, and related codes and regulations that govern housing, new building construction, remodeling, and repair. You will be working under the direction of the Supervising Building Inspector but are expected to be able to often work independently to meet the needs of our customers and resolve any outstanding inquiries. Much of your role will involve providing construction-related advice to property owners and contractors, ensuring that they are fully informed about the codes and regulations that apply to their projects; making customer service and emotional intelligence critical to the role. Your responsibilities will also include reviewing building plans, issuing occupancy permits, investigating complaints, writing inspection reports, and issuing Notices of Violation. We are looking for someone who is not only knowledgeable about building codes and regulations but also has excellent communication skills and is able to provide outstanding customer service to the City’s residents. You must be able to work both in a team setting and independently, have a strong attention to detail, and be able to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE The ideal candidates for these exciting opportunities will be customer-service focused with experience working on complex residential inspection projects. They will be eager to address a variety of property owner and contractor questions while demonstrating a high level of communication skills and emotional intelligence. The successful candidate will be helpful and supportive, as they balance their independent responsibilities with the needs of their team. They will have an in-depth understanding of various building construction craft areas, such as plumbing, electrical, heating, ventilation, remodeling, and zoning. The successful candidates will have a high attention to detail and the ability to use critical-thinking and problem-solving skills in their everyday work.
