The City of Ventura is hiring! We have an immediate opportunity in a key position within the organization. We are accepting applications for the position of Building Inspector / Senior Building Inspector.
Positions are flexibly staffed and may be filled at either level depending on qualifications as stated in the job descriptions.
What You’ll Do
The Building Inspector/Senior Building Inspector is responsible for inspecting routine and complex structures, including repairs, alterations and building systems at various stages of construction for compliance with the building, plumbing, electrical and mechanical codes and California State energy and accessibility laws. The position also investigating existing buildings for compliance with housing code and general land use standards. In addition to the duties above, the Building Inspector/Senior Building Inspector also reads and interprets building plans and specifications and on occasion, will accepts applications and processes plans at the public counter, as necessary.
Who You Are
The ideal candidate will have a strong knowledge of commercial and residential building construction, including structural, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, energy systems, green building, and accessibility. They should possess skill in communicating to clients all corrections in a respectful and effective manner. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication and coaching skills in code related subject matter and a thorough understanding of the construction process in the interpretation of codes and field conditions. Candidates possessing journeyman level experience in plumbing, mechanical, or electrical systems are highly desirable.

Position Qualifications
A combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to completion of high school and three years of experience in the building construction or inspection fields, providing knowledge of carpentry, electrical installations, plumbing, and other related building trades are required.
In addition, Senior Building Inspector requires 18 months of experience equivalent to that of a Building Inspector with the City of Ventura, or three years of journey-level building inspection experience.
License: Possession of a valid California Class C driver license may be required.
Certificates:
- Building Inspector: must obtain a Building Inspector Certificate, from the International Code Council (ICC), within one year of appointment.
- Senior Building Inspector: must possess a Building Inspector Certificate at time of appointment AND obtain a Combination Residential Inspector Certificate, or separate building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical certificates, from the ICC, within one year of appointment.

SALARY: $34.94 - $46.69 Hourly DOQ
