The San José City Attorney’s Office seeks an experienced, well-qualified, motivated, and collaborative attorney to join the Office as a full-time supervisory Chief Deputy City Attorney. The Office addresses many interesting and challenging legal issues. The Chief Deputy is one of two Chief Deputies responsible for supervising and assisting deputy and senior deputy attorneys with transactional and general government matters, and is part of the Office management team. In addition to attorney supervisory duties, the successful candidate will negotiate and draft contracts, write legal opinions, draft resolutions, ordinances, memoranda, and correspondence; provide legal advice to the City Council, Council Committees, and the City Manager; and provide legal representation and advice for various City departments. Experience in municipal law and attorney supervision is desirable, as is familiarity with legal issues related to transportation, public works, real estate and land use, environment, public procurement, public finance, public safety, and technology. The ideal candidate should also have a working knowledge of various local, state, and federal laws and program requirements, and be familiar with equity issues and efforts.
Candidates must be licensed to practice law in California, have an ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and be able to develop and maintain productive and collaborative relationships with co-workers, City officials, and other City departments.
