Are you someone with an appreciation for transparency in local government, outstanding grammar and proofreading skills and an eye for the details? The City of Arcata is currently accepting applications for a City Clerk, to fill an upcoming vacancy in the City Manager's Office.
Under the general direction of higher level staff, the selected candidate will plan, organize, oversee and perform the functions and activities of the City Clerk Division, including production of City Council minutes; preservation of records of actions taken by City Council; maintenance and retention of official records and documents, including resolutions and ordinances; election management and filing officer activities; serve as the City’s Elections Official, Filing Officer and Custodian of Records, including the custody, access and archiving of public records and public information; and perform all other related duties as assigned.

Examples of Duties
- Serves as the Clerk of the City Council; attends meetings and oversees the recording of all official proceedings; prepares public notifications, agendas, minutes, and other documents; coordinates the publication, filing, indexing, and safekeeping of all proceedings of the City Council, including ordinances and resolutions.
- Oversees and performs the operations of the City-wide records management program, records preservation and destruction, including the preservation and safekeeping of critical records and historic documents; sets and ensures legal compliance retention schedules for City records; develops and updates records retention policies and procedures; researches City documents, historical information, and other information as needed; attests, indexes, and files all legislative actions.
- Serves as custodian of official City records and public documents; seals and attests by signature to ordinances, resolutions, contracts, easements, deeds or other documents requiring city certification; manages codification and distribution of revisions to the Municipal Code; ensures compliance with the Public Records Act, reviews and monitors legal requests for records; ensures that requests for public records are processed as legally required.
- Serves as Filing Official for the Political Reform Act; manages the City's disclosure requirements for designated employees, distributes forms and notifications; conducts required audits; advises and trains candidates, committees, and treasurers on filing requirements; ensures campaign contribution limits and other requirements are met; corresponds with the Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) as appropriate.
- Serves as Elections Official for City and administers City elections for candidates, City ballot measures, and initiatives, referendums, and recall, including preparing candidate guidelines, administering the candidacy and nomination process, and providing information to candidates regarding procedural and disclosure requirements, publishing election notices and results within legal guidelines.
- Oversees the processing of all appointments, resignations, and separations for all official boards, commissions, and committees.
- Coordinates City Clerk's Office activities with those of other departments and outside agencies and organizations; provides staff assistance to the City Manager and City Council; prepares and presents staff reports and other necessary correspondence.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
