The County Clerk/Registrar of Voters is an elected office, elected to a four-year term. The currently elected County Clerk/Registrar of Voters has retired from office effective May 4, 2024. The Shasta County Board of Supervisors intends to appoint an individual to complete the remainder of the term, which will run through 12:00 noon on January 03, 2027. To appoint an individual to complete the elective term, the Board of Supervisors is required to consider the appointment of the County Clerk/Registrar of Voters in a public meeting of the Board of Supervisors.
All applications and information submitted with applications will be a matter of public record and interviews for the appointment will be held at a public meeting. Upon completion of the interviews, the Board will consider appointment of a successor for the balance of the elected term. The appointee to this current vacancy must run for election and be elected in order to remain in this position beyond the current term.
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
The position has specific qualifications pursuant to Government Code sections 1020, 24001, and 24004(a). The appointee must be at least 18 years of age, a resident in California, and be registered to vote in Shasta County by the time of appointment.
Additionally, as required by law, the candidate shall not practice law or have as a partner a lawyer or anyone who acts as a lawyer for a collection agency or act as a collector or for any collection agency or have as a partner a collector or anyone who acts as a collection agency in the county where they reside and hold office.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate for County Clerk/Registrar of Voters will foster an environment which will promote civil participation, transparency, public engagement and education, and will ensure elections and voter registration processes are handled with integrity; will work to maintain and restore public trust in the elections process; will understand California Elections laws; will have excellent written and verbal communication skills and exceptional leadership skills; the ability to work collaboratively and build relationships with the CAO, Board of Supervisors, Department Heads, community organizations, and the community; and have the ability to handle sensitive and/or politically charged situations with diplomacy and tact.
