Example of Duties
AS THE DEPUTY CITY ENGINEER, you will lead the division consisting of twelve (12) full time employees in overseeing all aspects of the $33 mil Capital Improvement Program, including the Annual Paving Program and street, water, wastewater and storm water related projects. You will also maintain responsibility for water rights acquisition and negotiations and compliance related to the City’s Municipal Stormwater MS4 permit in compliance with the Federal Clean Water Act.
You will provide oversight during all phases of development of large-scale projects. The Engineering Division is currently working on the Ranchero Widening Project, collaborating on the Brightline project, and contributing to the Silverwood Master Plan Community, among others.
This position is a Senior Management classification and serves at the pleasure of the City Manager. This position requires an employment agreement.

Typical Qualifications:
THE CITY OF HESPERIA is looking for a proactive, innovative, solution-oriented Deputy City Engineer who will facilitate a team-oriented and collaborative work environment. The Ideal Candidate will focus on the betterment of the entire City operation and the community while leading the diverse day-to-day activities of the department. They will possess leadership and management skills to develop and mentor staff. They will be a visionary leader with a team mentality, politically astute and an effective project manager. Strong communication skills, a commitment to public service, and the ability to collaborate effectively with internal departments is essential.
Experience and Education:
THE CITY IS SEEKING CANDIDATES with five (5) years’ experience in or strong exposure to the areas of development, civil engineering, and special projects. Documented ability to effectively communicate with a variety of audiences, both in and outside the organization including presentations with elected and appointed officials, developers, businesses, residents and City staff and two (2) years direct administrative leadership responsibilities.
The candidate will also possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering, or a related field. A Master’s degree is desired.
Licenses/Certificate:
- Possession of, or the ability to maintain a Professional Civil Engineer License (PE) as issued by the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists.
