Starting Salary $89,003.20 Annually (Plus a retention bonus up to $5,000)

Starting Salary $103,355.20 Annually (Plus a retention bonus up to $5,000)
The Kings County District Attorney's Office is offering a rewarding and challenging career opportunity to an experienced legal professional as a Deputy District Attorney I/II. The ideal candidate is a person with a passion for criminal law and pursuing justice. There is one immediate full-time vacancy in the District Attorney's Office. Future vacancies for this position may be filled from the eligible list to be established. The expected life of the eligible list is six months. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Deputy District Attorney I
This is the trainee or entry level in the Deputy District Attorney classification series, utilized for attorneys with minimal or no previous experience in the licensed practice of law. Incumbents at this level are assigned a variety of routine or less difficult cases. Incumbents work under the close supervision of a Deputy District Attorney III or IV as they develop their skills and knowledge. They are expected to advance to the II level when the minimum qualifications have been met and satisfactory performance in performing more difficult and responsible legal work has been demonstrated.
Deputy District Attorney II
Deputy District Attorney II is the level in the classification series for attorneys with prior experience in the licensed practice of law. Incumbents at this level are assigned work of average difficulty in all phases of criminal and/or civil law and, other than felonies, are expected to prosecute the full range of cases tried before the courts under general supervision. Incumbents may prosecute felony cases in Superior Court under close supervision. Work is performed exercising independent judgment and initiative, under the supervision of a Deputy District Attorney III or IV.
DUTY SAMPLE

Reviews cases for filing criminal complaints; reviews and evaluates law enforcement reports and requests for the issuance of criminal complaints; reviews subject rap sheets for prior/past criminal record to assist in making filing decisions; analyzes evidence presented and determines whether or not issuance of complaint can be justified, or whether additional evidence is required; suggests what additional evidence may be needed, how it might be obtained and legal procedures which must be observed in doing so; prepares witness list; supervises the preparation of the complaint; interviews and advises complainants and witnesses; conducts legal research; interprets and applies laws, court decisions and other legal authorities for use in the preparation of cases, opinions and briefs; appears in court representing the District Attorney's Office; conducts jury and court trials of criminal or civil cases; prepares written legal reports, opinions, briefs and appeals, pleadings and other legal documents; meets with clerical staff to discuss and resolve workflow problems; expands level of expertise; reads new case and statutory law and legislative changes; attends training seminars; reads and applies training material.

BOTH LEVELS
Education: Possession of active, valid membership in the California State Bar is evidence of sufficient education for this classification.
License: Possession of a valid appropriate California driver's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
EXPERIENCE
Level I: None required.
Level II: Two years of experience practicing as a licensed attorney or one year of experience as a Deputy District Attorney I in Kings County.
