About the position:
Salary: Annual salary for the position ranges from $191,356 - $232,554 dependent upon experience.
The Director of Development Services plans, organizes, manages, and provides administrative direction and oversight for all functions and activities of the Development Services Department, including planning, building and safety, and code compliance; directs and administers the planning and building operations and activities of the City, which include current, advance, and environmental planning, building plan check, permitting, inspection, and historic preservation activities. This Department Director classification oversees, directs, and participates in all activities of the Development Services Department, including short- and long term planning, development and administration of departmental policies, procedures, and services.
The Director of Development Services will be an energetic professional who will work closely and regularly with the City Manager on future opportunities for the community. While ensuring a thorough and accurate planning and entitlement process, the Director will proactively lead the Department in avoiding unnecessary bureaucracy and costly delays. The individual selected will be an effective leader and skilled manager who is enthusiastic in supporting and working collaboratively with the City Manager and the City Council. The new Director is expected to be a creative problem solver, identifying alternative financing strategies, and finding innovative methods for allocating Department resources to expedite development projects while honoring zoning and municipal codes and procedures. The Director will coach, mentor, and motivate Department staff to produce high-quality work products and consider new approaches to day-to-day operations and challenges. It is expected that the Director will foster a positive and proactive approach throughout the Department in responding to the business community and residents in a timely fashion.

Experience & Education: Experience: Seven (7) years of management and/or administrative experience in community development, urban planning, and project administration. Education: Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in community development, urban planning, civil engineering, or a related field. Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver’s license upon appointment. May be required to complete National Incident Management System (NIMS) Training.
