Salary: $148,244 to $209,860 DOE/DOQ
See the full recruitment brochure here The City of Long Beach, California, seeks its first Police Oversight Director (Director) to lead the new Office of Police Oversight. The Director, appointed by the Long Beach City Council, will provide integral leadership of the Office of Police Oversight and work to support and collaborate with the Police Oversight Commission (POC). While reporting directly to City Council, the Director will work closely with the POC, the City Manager, the Long Beach Police Chief, and other City Departments, as necessary, to ensure continued accountability, transparency and input from the community regarding the direction of police oversight in the City.
The new police oversight structure in Long Beach is based on an Auditor/Monitor Model, which is grounded in collaboration between the community and its police agency. The Director is charged with a primary duty to undertake systemic reviews and audits of policies, training, uses of force, complaints, and operational practices in general, as a basis to recommend key organizational changes that enhance accountability, transparency, and equity in policing. The Director will be highly collaborative with a background in independent auditing practices, program review and assessment, and have a high level of knowledge and familiarity with the Auditor/Monitor police oversight model. The Director will be an independent thinker who is adept at making data-driven recommendations, have active listening skills, and demonstrate consistent integrity – all essential skills and attributes for this role. This position is a great opportunity for a results-oriented professional to create a legacy, build collaborative relationships with the community and Long Beach police, and make a difference in the lives of many!
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE The ideal candidate will be eager to implement organizational operations to realize the community’s calls for transparency, accountability, mutual respect, and fair treatment in all aspects of law enforcement. They will be highly collaborative with a background in independent auditing practices and familiar with the Auditor/Monitor Model, as well as prior experience working in diverse multi-cultural communities. Strong decision-making skills, listening to understand, cultural competency and a respectful attitude are must-haves for this role. The selected candidate will thrive in an environment that sees performance gaps as opportunities for collaboration and be driven by not only improving performance gaps, but highlighting the critical work that LBPD is already doing. They will also be community focused and understand that input from the public, LBPD, staff, and City Council is imperative to the success of this role.
