Director of Public Works

The City of San Bernardino, California (population of 217,000) is offering an outstanding opportunity for an experienced public works professional who is seeking to make a true difference in a community on the rise by leading the Public Works Department with creative solutions to challenges. Reporting to the City Manager, the Director of Public Works provides the day-to-day management of a staff of 106 full-time employees, with an operating budget of $27 million and a Capital Improvement Program budget of $28.3 million. The new Director of Public Works will possess leadership and budgeting skills to creatively deliver projects, recognizing the City’s fiscal challenges as well as establish and maintain cooperative relationships with outside agencies, regulators, and members of the public while also coaching and mentoring staff to achieve the goals of the organization. The ideal candidate will possess a proven track record of successful capital project delivery and a hands-on approach with demonstrated success. Top tier candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of progressively responsible development and municipal public works experience of which at least 5 years should be in a management capacity. The current annual salary range for this exempt position is $168,036 to $204,240 per year, based on qualifications. A monthly car allowance of $725 per month and a benefits package, including CalPERS Retirement, is also offered.
