The City of Sacramento, California, is seeking a Director of Public Works (Director) to lead the Department of Public Works (Department) — the second-largest department in the City! The Director will oversee the Department’s seven divisions, 766 full-time staff, and an approximate $237 million operating budget. This position is a community-facing role with a diverse range of stakeholders, from City officials to community members to private developers to regulatory agencies. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in capital improvement programs, budget development, and California's highly complex regulatory environment. Additionally, the successful candidate will be highly personable, adaptable, and communicative, with excellent presentation and negotiation skills. This role requires a steadfast leader who is willing to connect with all levels of staff and work diligently to overcome complex challenges and situations.   THE IDEAL CANDIDATE The ideal candidate will have a strong background in municipal operations and capital improvements, with an in-depth understanding of California’s regulatory environment. They will be overseeing a very complex multi-million-dollar budget with various funding streams, requiring candidates to have an advanced financial acumen. Along with these technical abilities, this leader will be highly personable, adaptable, and communicative. This is a public facing role, requiring candidates to be effective presenters, negotiators, and respectable representatives for the City. The successful candidate will want to connect with all levels of staff, putting themselves in the field to understand the DPW operations and functions.
