The District: Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District encompasses 113 square miles which is bound by the Ventura County line to the east and south, the City of Moorpark line to the west, and the Oak Ridge area of the Santa Susana Mountains to the North.  More than 141,000 people reside within this area, which includes the city of Simi Valley population of 125,115, the community of Oak Park population of 13,730, and various unincorporated areas within Ventura County with a population of 2,801. The climate in the County is pleasant and is a great area to live and work. The Park District’s headquarters are located in the City of Simi Valley. The District is held in high regard within the communities it serves. Rancho Simi employs 87 full-time and approximately 300 part-time staff members; is financially stable with a balanced operating budget of $25.8 million and a capital budget of $10.9 million.
Position: The Director of Recreation reports to the District Manager and has responsibility for the operations of the Recreation Department, which includes the provision of recreation programming in the following areas; adult and youth sports, alternative recreation (therapeutic recreation), aquatics, before and after school clubs and day camps, facility uses, golf courses, preschool, program marketing, recreation classes, senior activities, special events, volunteers, youth and teen activities. The Department includes 22 full-time employees, 292 part-time employees and has an operating budget of $10.8 million.
Candidate: Building upon the current successes of the Recreation Department, the ideal candidate will have a passion for providing recreation services and a vision for instilling creativity and innovation in the District’s recreation program offerings and services. The candidate will be energetic, a consensus builder and have excellent communication skills. The candidate will work well with elected Board of Directors, be an active member of the Executive Management team, successfully support the Department staff, efficiently manage the Departmental budget, and implement and adhere to District and Departmental policies and procedures. The candidate will be a positive leader within the community, the organization and the Recreation Department.
Qualifications:
Education: Requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university. A Master’s Degree is preferred.
Experience: Five years professional and progressively responsible work experience in recreation or related field. Three or more years of management-level experience within a government organization. A satisfactory combination of experience and training that demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the functions of the job. Must have excellent managerial and supervisory abilities, be able to use independent judgment and create a positive, constructive relationship with the public and staff. Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills and be adept at performing technical duties utilizing Max Galaxy, ADP, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher. Must be able to delegate authority and responsibility, select, supervise and train staff, analyze problems and determine and implement solutions, research and evaluate, prepare clear and concise verbal and written reports, prepare and administer departmental budget and interpret and apply policies, laws and regulations accurately.
