THE POSITION
Under general supervision, performs complete mechanical repairs, maintenance, installation of equipment and servicing of automotive, emergency and construction equipment maintained by the City’s Fleet facility.
Incumbent may be required to work stand-by on rotational basis and report to work on a callback basis as needed within a designated time frame. Standby assignment is at the discretion of the Division Head.
This job classification is flexibly staffed and the position may be filled at either level depending on the qualifications of the incumbent and the staffing needs of the City. An eligibility list is being established to fill the current vacancy as well as future part-time or full-time related vacancies.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Equipment Mechanic I is the entry-level class in the equipment mechanic series. Under general supervision, incumbents perform entry to journey-level work with the less complex repair work and assisting the Equipment Mechanic II with the more complex repairs at an increasing skill level. Under this training concept, incumbents are expected to advance to the Equipment Mechanic II level.
Equipment Mechanic II is the journey-level class in the equipment mechanic series. Under limited supervision, work is performed at the full journey level and is characterized by responsibility for independently performing more complex repairs. May provide lead technical assistance to an Equipment Mechanic I on a project basis. Positions are flexibly staffed and normally filled by advancement from Equipment Mechanic I. When filled from the outside, the job requires the journey level skills described above.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
Equipment Mechanic I: Maintains motor vehicles and heavy equipment in proper working order by performing inspections, repairs and electronic diagnostics of brakes, steering, engines, transmissions, suspension, tires, cranes, manlifts, hydraulics systems and related mechanical systems. Performs preventive and corrective maintenance, crane, BIT, emission, accident, quality assurance and other industry inspections.  Promotes shop safety.
Electronic diagnostics of less complex problems and performs such work as overhauling hydraulic systems and repairing electrical/electronic systems; performs minor body work and painting; welding and fabrication; responds to emergency calls and makes necessary field repairs; maintains and repairs shop tools and equipment and maintains all in clean, working condition; keeps records of work.
Rebuild engines; repair transmissions, differentials, starters, and fuel pumps; disassemble motors of autos, trucks, and heavy equipment such as tractors, loaders, graders, rollers, back hoes, pavers, and high lifts.
Electronic diagnostics, inspection, and repairs to engines, differentials, clutches, automatic and standard transmissions, transfer cases, suspension systems, complex hydraulic and electrical systems, and hybrid systems. Performs engine tune-ups and smog certifications. Performs complete and partial engine overhauls on gasoline and diesel engines.
Electronic diagnostics, inspection, and repairs to vacuum, hydraulic, and air brake systems. Electronic diagnostics, inspections, and repairs to electrical systems and components such as, but not limited to, alternators, starters, lights, and switches, gas and diesel fuel systems. Installs communications and emergency lighting equipment on City vehicles.
Performs basic machine shop and welding, and fabrication incidental to mechanical repairs. Installs accessories on new police, fire and public works vehicles.
Maintains records of repairs performed; prepares requisitions for needed parts and materials.
Performs field or shop inspections of heavy and light duty equipment to determine repair needs and/or estimates costs of repairs. Conducts preventive maintenance and field repairs of disabled equipment in the field, when necessary.
Performs related work as required.
In addition, the Equipment Mechanic II: Electronic diagnostics, inspection and repairs to more complex equipment problems; disassembles and overhauls motors; repairs transmissions, differentials, fuel pumps, steering gear, starters, and universal joints; fabricates and alters special construction equipment; maintains complex equipment components such as fire apparatus and sewer machines, generators, pumps, and motors; may maintain inventory and stock of spare parts; trains and provides occasional project oversight to Equipment Mechanic I staff.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATES
License: Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required. Within six months of employment, incumbent is required to obtain and, thereafter, maintain the following license:

1)     California Class A license with tanker endorsement.

2)     According to the Department of Transportation, drug testing is required.

Certificates:  Depending on assignment, a California Emission Tester Certification may be required.
Required within six months of employment:  OSHA Forklift Operator certification and OSHA Compliance Fleet Tire Service certification.
The following current certifications are desirable:
ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification
CARB Diesel Emission Tester certification
Fire Apparatus Emergency Vehicle Technician I and II certifications issued by the Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification Commission
Law Enforcement Vehicle Installation Technician certification issued by the Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification Commission

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Equipment Mechanic I
A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to the completion of high school, supplemented by course work in auto, truck, and/or construction mechanics, and two years of recent experience performing preventive maintenance and routine repairs on motor vehicles or heavy equipment. Employees must be able to provide a complete set of basic automotive tools.
Equipment Mechanic II
A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to the completion of high school, supplemented by course work in auto, truck, and/or construction mechanics; and three years recent experience as a mechanic in automotive and heavy equipment repair are required (one year experience performing duties comparable to those of an Equipment Mechanic I with the City of Ventura plus two years additional experience). Employees must be able to provide a complete set of basic automotive tools.
