OVERVIEW
Under the general direction of the Fire Chief, the Fire Marshal manages, plans, organizes, coordinates and supervises the activities and operations of Fire Prevention; performs difficult and complex inspection of commercial and residential properties, places of assembly and conducts brush clearance inspections.  Coordinates assigned activities with other City departments, divisions, and outside agencies; and provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Fire Chief and City management staff.

The Fire Marshal classification performs the full range of technical inspection and public fire education at the journey-level in Fire Prevention of the Fire Department. Incumbents in this classification are considered Peace Officers under Penal Code section 830.37(b) when acting in their capacity to enforce laws relating to fire prevention. The Fire Marshal has the primary responsibility for conducting and supervising brush clearance compliance inspections, notice writing, and education.

ANNUAL SALARY: $70,740.12

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: 
Five years of progressively responsible experience including brush clearance and fire safety standards and systems, relevant supervisory and administrative experience.

Prior experience as a Fire Marshal or Fire Prevention Officer with supervisory and management experience is highly desirable.

Education: Equivalent to Bachelors of Arts degree with major course work in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Public Administration, or a related field, supplemented by specialized training in fire prevention.

Licenses/Certificates: Valid Class C Driver’s License from the California DMV

Special Requirements: Ability to work hours complementary to the Fire Chiefs schedule, work a variable work week including some weekends and regular after-hours meetings.
