Under general supervision, the Firefighter will assist in fire suppression, medical emergencies and rescues; perform apparatus, building and grounds maintenance perform fire prevention, fire inspection and public   education activities; repair and test fire apparatus, equipment, buildings, and grounds; participate in training and educational activities; maintain records and reports; may operate and drive fire apparatus; and other related work as required.
In addition to the above, may be assigned to coverage for vacation, sick, education training, and other necessary work periods at various facilities. May be assigned additional tasks with limited and or little supervision.

The Department
Founded in 1852 the Auburn Fire Department members take pride in their heritage and continuous service to the community.
Auburn Fire Department is a full service operation that responds to approximately 2,000 calls for assistance per year, and operates out of three fire stations.
The Community
Renowned for its beauty and outstanding quality of life, the City of Auburn is 7.5 square miles and home to an enlightened, diverse, and civic-minded population of approximately 14,011 people.
Located at the crossroads of Interstate 80 and Highway 49, Auburn is the County Seat of Placer County as well as the home of the California Welcome Center. The City is located in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range at elevations between 1,000 and 1,500 feet above sea level. Auburn’s location provides the advantage of being above the valley fog and below the Sierra snow line.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
· Possession of a valid unrestricted CA driver's license and ability to obtain proper classification and endorsements for operation of a fire apparatus.
· High School Diploma or equivalent
· State of California FF1 certification
· Certified California EMT and CPR For The Professional Rescuer (Completion and/or certification of EMT meet this requirement)
· Driver Operator certificate is desirable but must have ability to obtain within 12 months.
· Hazardous Materials First Responder Awareness/ Operations certification.

Environment-Reactive emergency, natural or man-made disaster, and routine fire prevention  environments with travel from site to site; the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in areas of limited and restricted entry and exit; regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and wet and/or humid conditions; occasionally works in high, precarious places; exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibration; risk of electrical shock,  radiation, drowning, and asphyxiation; the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, the noise level is occasionally very loud when responding to emergency calls and when working at a fire or other emergency incident.

Physical- Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to work in a emergency response setting; walk, stand, sit, or run for prolonged periods of time; occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; occasionally climb and balance; regularly push, pull, lift, and/or carry light to moderate weights;    frequently lift and/or move moderate to heavy weights; operate fire suppression and medical response equipment, apparatus, and tools; requires a sense of touch, finger dexterity, and gripping with hands and fingers; ability to speak and hear to exchange information; ability to operate a vehicle to travel to various locations.

Vision: See within the normal range of vision with or without correction; specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and    ability to adjust focus.

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Salary
· Base salary range of $52,154- $65,141.Annually
· Tuition reimbursement up to $1200 per year

Retirement
· CalPERS Safety formula, subject to the Pension Reform Act.
· Participation in CalPERS 2.7% at 57 plan or Classic 2%@50
· Employee pays entire “Employee” obligation towards plan plus 3% of the Employer portion

· Medical Savings 115 Plan

 Insurance
· City offers CalPERS health insurance plans for employees and dependents. City covers 80% of plan costs based on a formula and employee pays 20% of plan costs. (May be additional costs to employee dependent upon plan  chosen) 
· Life insurance of $50,000
 
Deferred Compensation
· Choice of plans available. Voluntary employee contribution

Leave Program
· 108 hours are paid to Firefighting personnel throughout the year in lieu of holiday time-off
· Vacation-144 hours per year for the first two (2) years of service
· Sick leave-144 hours per year
