The City of Ventura Public Works Department – Fleet Division has two immediate vacancies for Fleet & Equipment Technicians I/II. If you are able to perform complete mechanical repairs, maintenance, servicing and installation of equipment on automotive, emergency and construction equipment, one of these positions may be for you!

The Public Works Department with the City of Ventura has two Fleet & Equipment Technician I/II vacancies available immediately. Positions are flexibly staffed and may be filled at either level depending on qualifications as stated in the job descriptions. Incumbents may be required to work standby on a rotational basis and report to work on a callback basis as needed within a designated time frame. Standby assignment is at the discretion of the Division Head.

What You’ll Do

Depending on experience, the team member will act in an entry level or journey capacity maintaining equipment at the City’s Fleet facility. The Fleet Division is responsible for 461 city-owned vehicles and equipment, which includes public safety vehicles, heavy construction equipment, hybrid electric vehicles, and the City's backup emergency generators.

Position Qualifications 

Fleet & Equipment Technician I: A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to the completion of high school, supplemented by course work in auto, truck, and/or construction mechanics, and two years of recent experience performing preventive maintenance and routine repairs on motor vehicles or heavy equipment. Employees must be able to provide a complete set of basic automotive tools.

Fleet & Equipment Technician II: A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to the completion of high school, supplemented by course work in auto, truck, and/or construction mechanics; and three years recent experience as a mechanic in automotive and heavy equipment repair are required (one year experience performing duties comparable to those of Fleet & Equipment Technician I with the City of Ventura plus two years additional experience). Employees must be able to provide a complete set of basic automotive tools.

License: Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required. Within six months of employment, incumbent is required to obtain and, thereafter, maintain the following license: California Class A license with tanker endorsement.  (According to the Department of Transportation, drug testing is required.)

 Certificates:  

  • Depending on the assignment, a California Emission Tester Certification may be required.
  • Required within six months of employment:  OSHA Forklift Operator certification and OSHA Compliance Fleet Tire Service certification.

The following current certifications are desirable:

  • ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification
  • CARB Diesel Emission Tester certification
  • Fire Apparatus Emergency Vehicle Technician I and II certifications issued by the Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification Commission
  • Law Enforcement Vehicle Installation Technician certification issued by the Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification Commission

Salary:  $29.79 - $39.81 Hourly DOQ
