Planning Director Annual Salary: $110,463 - $138,082 DOE/DOQ
Planning Manager Annual Salary: $101,568 - $126,963 DOE/DOQ

*The City has flexibility to hire either a Planning Director or Planning Manager depending on candidate experience and qualifications.

The City of Solvang seeks a Planning Director or a Planning Manager (Director/Manager) who will direct the City’s current and long-range planning services and bring a depth of experience in permitting, land use planning, public planning, and related policies and procedures, including NEPA, CEQA, and environmental laws, codes, and practices. Along with having this technical knowledge, the Director/Manager will be highly attuned to the political nature of city planning while working with community members and City staff. They will be an effective communicator, relationship builder, and change maker. Being flexible to change, results oriented, and knowledgeable about the functions and processes of municipal organizations is highly important. This position will report to the City Manager and oversee the Planning Assistant, contracted building services, and an approximate budget of $500,000.

THE JOB/THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The Director/Manager oversees the Planning Division, including an Assistant Planner and a budget of approximately $500,000. They have general oversight of planning and building contracts while also serving as key staff member for the Planning Commission and Design Review Committee. This position manages the long-range, current planning, and general plan, acts as the primary staff representative for the Division, and prepares policy statements on sensitive issues for consideration by the City Manager, Planning Commission, Design Review Committee, and the City Council. The ideal candidate should have a background in land use planning, public planning, and related policies and procedures, including NEPA, CEQA, and environmental laws, codes, and practices; experience with general plan and plan elements (zoning, subdivision, and environmental regulations); and public administration experience including budgets, program planning, evaluation, and the public hearing processes.
