The Ideal Candidate

We're looking for an individual who will bring leadership and vision to the Mammoth Lakes Police Department. The new Police Chief will support and enhance an environment that embraces collaboration, integrity, trust, respect, and engagement with the Department, the Town, and community of Mammoth Lakes. The ideal candidate will be engaged with the community and understands the dynamic of being a hands-on leader in a small rural town that is dependent upon a tourism-based economy. You must have demonstrated leadership ability, be team-oriented, and committed to the future direction of the Department and the wider community. You must be flexible, have exemplary interpersonal skills, and bring integrity and outstanding moral character as a leader working collaboratively with the Town Manager, Town department heads, and Town Council.

The Community

The Town of Mammoth Lakes is a year-round resort community located in the southwestern region of Mono County along the Eastern Sierra mountain range. The town is surrounded by over two million acres of forest and is bordered by the Ansel Adams and John Muir Wilderness areas adjacent to Yosemite National Park. We have a year-round resident population of approximately 8,000, which increases to over 35,000 during peak seasons. Mammoth Lakes offers a fantastic lifestyle and abundant recreational opportunities such as skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, camping, rock climbing, and so much more!

The Department

The Mammoth Lakes Police Department's mission is to provide quality law enforcement services, while building partnerships to prevent crime, maintain public trust, and enhance the quality of life throughout the community. We are a full service law enforcement agency that uses both traditional and non-traditional policing methods to respond to the community's needs. We hold ourselves to the highest ethical and professional standards of conduct, always treating people with dignity, fairness, and respect. The department has 16 sworn personnel including the Police Chief, five (5) non-sworn positions (three (3) Code Compliance Officers and two (2) administrative positions), a part-time reserve officer/investigator, office intern, and crossing guards. The FY2023-24 departmental budget is $5.72 million.
