MONTHLY SALARY RANGES:
Deputy City Attorney I: $6,273 - $10,552
Deputy City Attorney II: $8,550 - $11,456
Assistant City Attorney: $11,540 - $15,660
The City of Oceanside invites applications for this exciting career opportunity. The City Attorney’s Office is seeking a hands-on, detail and team-oriented professional with energy, focus, strong ethics, as well as the ability to make decisions independently while keeping the City Attorney informed.
The City Attorney’s Office provides a full range of legal services to the City Council, City Manager, department directors and City advisory groups. These services include providing legal advice and counseling related to proposed actions as well as the defense of the City and its employees in state and federal courts and administrative proceedings.
The City Attorney’s office prepares and/or reviews City Council reports, legal opinions, ordinances, resolutions, contracts, agreements and leases. The department also prosecutes City Code violations and serves as the legal counsel to the Harbor District and the Community Development Commission.
This position is a key member of the City Attorney's Office and must be a results-oriented team member. The primary function of this position will be to provide a full range of professional legal representation, advice and opinions to the Oceanside Police Department and other duties as assigned.
There is one vacancy in the City Attorney's Office. The vacancy will be filled as either a Deputy City Attorney I, Deputy City Attorney II or Assistant City Attorney depending on qualifications and experience.
The incumbent will provide a wide range of legal counsel and advice to the members of the Oceanside Police Department, including management, police officers and civilian employees. This will include legal research and analysis to ensure compliance with federal, state and local statutes, regulations and policies. The attorney will be responsible for conducting training on employment laws and policies as well as civil liability issues. The incumbent will provide advice related to the implementation of discipline and represent the City in administrative hearings concerning grievances in accordance with the applicable memorandum of understanding. As assigned by the City Attorney, the incumbent will defend the City in state and federal court actions arising from law enforcement activities, provide legal advice regarding Public Record Act requests and the handling and disposition of evidence, respond to Pitchess motions and staff the City’s Police and Fire Commission meetings. This position will report to the City Attorney and is responsible for performing related duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate should possess the following qualities: Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal; a sound working knowledge of civil and criminal litigation, trial advocacy skills; an ability to work cooperatively and effectively with elected officials, executives, management, line staff and the public; a broad understanding of all facets of municipal government law and an abiding commitment to public service; strong analytical and administrative capabilities; organizational, team and goal-oriented skills; the skill and ability to use current computerized legal research programs; effective skills in time and caseload management; confidence and persuasiveness; and be proactive and results-oriented.
