THE POSITION
Under general supervision, to lead and participate in the performance of chemical, physical, biological, and microbiological analyses of potable water, wastewater, industrial waste, storm water, receiving waters, and other environmental samples.
May be required to work weekends and holidays.
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Senior Laboratory Analyst classification differs from the Laboratory Analyst I/II in that incumbents lead the work of the unit as well as perform more complex analyses requiring the use of sophisticated analytical instructions and troubleshoots analytical and instrument issues. The Senior Laboratory Analyst also prepares monthly reports in the absence of the Laboratory Supervisor.

Has prior working experience in a water/wastewater laboratory operation
Understands California Water Environmental Association sampling procedures and chemical testing methods

Demonstrates proficiency in the use of computers and has excellent math and computation skills Has excellent interpersonal and communication skills
 
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
Assists in planning, directing and scheduling the work of subordinate staff in routine sampling and analytical procedures.  
Analyzes samples using sophisticated instrumentation such as Atomic Absorption, Gas Chromatograph and Ion Chromatograph. Calibrates and maintains laboratory instruments used in analysis.
Interprets and reports data in database and assists in preparing technical reports.
Coordinates the completion of required State and Federal performance evaluation tests for laboratory certification with the Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program.
Performs Quality Control and Quality Assurance reviews of all laboratory analysis. 
Instructs and assists laboratory staff in routine sampling and analysis procedures; conducts chemical and biological analysis of environmental samples by standard and non-standard operating methods and procedures.
Prepares media, standard solutions and reagents; maintains records of sampling analysis procedures and results in conformance with professional practice.
Performs equipment and supply inventories and prepares purchase orders for materials and supplies.
Maintains and updates Standard Operating Procedures as needed.
Performs other related work as assigned or required.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATES
License:  Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record is required.
Certificate: Possession of a California Water Environment Association Laboratory Analyst II certification is required upon hire.  Possession of, or ability to obtain, a California Water Environment Association Laboratory Analyst III certification within 12 months of hire.

MINIMUM QWUALIFICATIONS
A combination of education and experience equivalent to one of the following:
Associate degree in a related field and four years of full-time laboratory analysis experience; or Bachelor’s degree in a related field and three years of full-time laboratory analysis experience.
