SENIOR PLANS EXAMINER

Salary: $74,346.90 - $99,625.76/year

THE POSITION
Under general direction, performs complex plan reviews of building additions and alterations for compliance with building and local ordinance, state laws and other regulations; provides information to permit applicants concerning City building standards and regulations.  Consults with contractors, engineers, architects, and the general public concerning the acceptability of drawings submitted for approval to build within the City. May act as the Construction Permit Supervisor in that position’s absence.

Possesses a valid ICC plans Examiner certificate

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Depending on assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Provides exemplary customer service to all individuals by demonstrating a willingness to be attentive, understanding, responsive, fair, courteous and respectful, and to actively participate in maintaining a positive customer service environment.
Consults with contractors, engineers, architects, and the general public concerning the acceptability of drawings submitted for approval to build within the City.
Reviews a variety of complex residential and commercial building additions and alteration plans for compliance with the California Codes including Building, Historical, Green, Energy, Existing Building, Mechanical, Plumbing and Electrical Codes, and other State laws and regulations.
Provides technical information and assistance to engineers, architects, contractors and general public regarding the permit process, plan reviews, fees and the codes and regulations enforced by the City.  Provides technical and code interpretation assistance to Division staff.  Provides training and instructions on the City codes as assigned. 
Performs public counter duties and tasks as required.  Researches building plan check status and permit status utilizing computerized record systems.   
Responds to complex inquiries and conducts site inspections as assigned; ensuring adherence to codes, laws, regulations and ordinances. 
Provides technical information to architects, engineers and contractors.
Provides training for staff assisting the public at the counter; provides recommendations during staff performance evaluations
Prepares special reports, drafts recommended building policies and ordinances and procedures as directed.  Assists in preparing community promotions and public information related to assigned program; performs other related duties as assigned.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATES
License:  Depending on assignment, possession of a valid California Class C driver's license  is required.
Certificate: Possession of, and ability to maintain, ICC Plans Examiner certification is required at time of application.  Possession of any of the following current and valid licenses are highly desirable: State of California Civil Engineer, State of California Structural Engineer, or State of California Architect.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Requires a combination of education, training and experience equivalent to completion of a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Architecture or a related field, supplemented by additional coursework in construction technology, building and three years  of plans review experience.  Lead or supervisory and construction field experience highly desirable.
