Thousands of mourners gathered at a memorial service for former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan on Friday, April 28 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Downtown L.A.
Mayor Karen Bass spoke during the ceremony. She praised Riordan for the "healthy and heartfelt impatience” with which he pursued solutions to some of Los Angeles’ greatest challenges.
Also in attendance were former mayors Antonio Villaraigosa and James K. Hahn, U.S. Senator Alex Padilla, former Gov. Pete Wilson, and many more.
Riordan served as mayor from 1993 to 2001. He led the city through the aftermath of the Rodney King riots and the destruction of the 1994 Northridge earthquake. The moderate Republican would become the city’s last GOP mayor.
Riordan died on April 19 at the age of 92.
