Before a crowd of more than 1,000 onlookers, 43-year-old London Breed was sworn in as the 45th Mayor San Francisco Wednesday. She is the first African American female to ever hold the office.

Lieutenant Governor and former San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom conducted the swearing-in ceremony. Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown and San Francisco NAACP President Rev. Amos C. Brown were also present.

Breed began her inaugural address by asking for a moment of silence for her predecessor, the late Edwin Lee. She then struck an optimistic and inspirational tone, reflecting on her humble beginnings growing up in a public housing project just blocks from where she was standing on the steps of City Hall.

Breed did not shy away from the city’s most pressing issues, however. For too long, officials have failed to properly address affordable housing, chronic homelessness, and mental illness, she said. Under her watch, Breed vowed change.
