Three years after he resigned in the face of multiple sexual assault allegations, former Windsor Mayor Dominic Foppoli says he’s feeling vindicated. On Thursday, California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced he was pausing the investigation into Foppoli due to lack of evidence.
"At this time we don't have enough evidence to warrant filing charges on the cases not barred by the statute of limitations,” said Bonta. “However, our investigation remains open and we urge anyone who believes they may be a victim or who has evidence to come forward."
Foppoli was accused of sexually assaulting three different women in 2021, including a town council member and former reality TV star. More women would eventually come forward, bringing the number of accusers to more than 12.
Foppoli has always denied the allegations.
"I think they saw an opportunity for an easy payday and to get someone out of office they didn't like, and made up stories," he told ABC 7 News.
The women are sticking by their stories, and they are now taking Foppoli to civil court. The investigation’s suspension reeks of “the good 'ol boys club, it feels like a lot of protections and delays,” one of the accusers said.
