Mary Graham Children’s Shelter (MGCS) is a division of the San Joaquin County Human Services Agency and is the county’s 24-hour residential facility for the emergency care of up to 60 children. The Shelter provides comfort and care for children who have been severely abused, abandoned and neglected. Children range in age from newborn to 18 years of age. This middle management position reports to the Director of Mary Graham Children’s Shelter and is responsible to assist in the management of the daily operations of the MGCS. Of 54 total allocated positions to MGCS,11 Shelter Supervisors and 30 Shelter Counselors provide direct care and supervision of children brought to the shelter. Minimum qualifications: Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in social or behavioral sciences, business or public administration, or a closely related field. Experience: Five years performing social services work for children and their families, including at least three years as a supervisor. Substitutions: 1) A master’s degree in social work, psychology, sociology, criminal justice, child development, public administration, business administration or related field may be substituted for one year of the required non-supervisory social work experience; OR 2) experience performing social services work for adults may be substituted, on a year-for-year basis, for up to two years of the required non-supervisory children’s social work experience; OR 3) experience performing professional personnel, fiscal, or similar administrative duties in a shelter, group home, or similar residential setting may be substituted, on a year-for-year basis, for up to two years of the required non-supervisory children’s social services work experience; AND 4) one year of experience supervising personnel, fiscal, or related administrative staff and functions in a shelter, group home, or similar residential setting may be substituted for one year of the required supervisory experience AND License: Possession of a valid California driver’s license. Certificates: Must become certified in Basic First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) within the first six months of employment and maintain such certification during employment.
